The 2017 edition of the global Fortune 500 rankings hit the headlines a few days ago and the details provide a slant that will be of interest to India. The indications from the list point to a global shift of economic power are eye-opening.
The 500 companies listed on the prized list shows a disproportionate distribution between Europe, North America, and Asia.
How India Fared?
The top –performing Indian company was Indian Oil was placed 168 with a turnover of $53 billion while six other companies from India made the top 500 rankings. These companies were Reliance Industries, State Bank of India as well as Tata Motors. Others were Rajesh Exports, Bharat Petroleum and the last on the list was Hindustan Petroleum.

Indian companies have made the list over the last three years consistently and it shows how well Indian companies are faring on the global scale.
The Asian Edge
Asia has a total of 197 companies on the list while Europe is host to 143 and North America is the home grounds for another 145 companies that made the cut. The rest of the world was left to make do with a paltry 15 companies to complete the roll call.
The top five companies in terms of revenue were shared between Asia and North America. Japan has one entrant while China had three and the US, bagged the top spot.
The top five most profitable companies had four Chinese businesses and the top spot was clichéd by global smartphone giant, Apple.
The General Rankings
The top placed company on the basis of turnover was the American retail giant, Wal-Mart with a gross of $485 billion. It was closely followed by the State Grid of China with$315 billion and Sinopec made it to the third position with $267 billion.
The most profitable company index showed Apple as the top performer with $45 billion. The Industrial Bank & Commercial Bank of China made it to the second with $41 billion while the third placed company was China Construction Bank with $34billion.
