After the constant pleas raised by the individuals, the government has finally bowed down its pressure of linking Aadhaar with PAN card by August 31, 2017. Now, it has further extended the deadline to March 31,2018. This is the third time in a row that the government has granted the extension to the individuals. As of now, around 13.28 crores out of 33 crore PAN’s have been linked to biometric Aadhaar card and rest are yet to be linked.
Why has the PAN-Aadhaar linking extension been granted?
The extension has been granted after hearing the petitioners who have challenged syncing of Aadhar card with PAN card on grounds of breach to the right of privacy. The hearing will be held in the next week. Though the deadline for linking a bank account and PAN card has been extended, the final date of linking the mobile phone with Aadhar card remains the same. Here’s what a top official has to say about it:-
“It has come to notice that some of the taxpayers have not yet completed the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. Therefore, to facilitate the process of linking, it has been decided to further extend the time for linking of Aadhaar with PAN till 31.03.2018.”
Some of the taxpayers have not yet completed the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. To facilitate the process of linking, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the time for linking of Aadhaar with PAN till 31.03.2018.
